Food Stamps For Thought

The July numbers are in for the SNAP program and they show the 20th straight monthly record number of people receiving assistance.

The number of Americans receiving food stamps rose to a record 41.8 million in July as the jobless rate hovered near a 27-year high, the government said.

Recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program subsidies for food purchases jumped 18 percent from a year earlier and increased 1.4 percent from June, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said today in a statement on its website. Participation has set records for 20 straight months.

Your depression-era bread lines are mostly contained to Wal-Mart at midnight on the first of the month.  If this 18% yearly growth in the numbers keeps up then we'll be at 50 million people on SNAP by next summer.  Maybe sooner.

One in seven of us are on SNAP.  It will soon be one in six...well, that is until Republicans start in with another round of "welfare reform" again.

Took me all of five minutes to find out that since Obama took office in January 2009 he's added ten million Americans to food stamps and increased the monthly cost by $2 billion a month to $5.6 billion.

How is Obama not a complete failure? He's doubled the cost of the program in just two years.

Recovery summer, right?

Heckuva job, Barry!

No, "complete failure" would have been adding 10 million people to the rolls and cutting the program by 20%, which would be the Republican solution.

Also, as far as stimulus goes, this is money that's clearly being spent right back into the economy every month, yes?

No.

Talk about what is, not your made up hatred of conservatives.

FACT: 10 million more people are on SNAP since Obama took office.

FACT: Total cost of benefits per month is up almost $2 billion under Obama.

FACT: Benefits per person are up 18% since Obama took office.

No wonder 90% plus of blacks like Obama, huh?

Alright. So, there you are with your facts and all and you're sailing along and then you make the terribly racist assumption that either most African-Americans are on SNAP, or that most people on SNAP are African-American...neither which is true.

You might want to read over this story here for the truth. A majority of people on SNAP are poor, rural whites.
